Enterprise Hosting
Running your system in a VPS gives you the flexibility to upgrade your box as needed. But what happens when sharing a box doesn't make sense anymore as you need a box fully dedicated to you (you have larger memory or processor requirements than a normal VPS can offer you). If that is the case then the next option is to move to a VPS Dedicated server. Using a VPS Dedicated server you are give all of the system's resources but also can use all of the great features that VPS gives you such as the great management options.
Advantages
- You can assume the full system resources and are only bound by the physical resources of the machine. Add as much memory and other resources as the physical limitations of the server allow.
- Easily make the migration from a normal VPS to a VPS Dedicated server.
- Easily move from one VPS Dedicated machine to a larger VPS Dedicated machine with more resources.
- Easy to take data snapshots using the VPS tools to take incremental or full backups.
Disadvantages
- With a software based VPS you are not given the ability to sometimes add your own custom kernel. This can limit you if you are running an applcation that needs special kernel optimizations configured. However the general kernel that comes with a software VPS tends to have everything a normal hosting provider would ever want.
- You are still sharing the same physical box as multiple users so a large enough attack can cause loss of ability to contact the server since that port is saturated. VPSit works around this problem by stopping all attacks "before" they get to the server with inline DDoS IDS / IPS devices.
